For those of us who work in UK business schools, the ABS journal quality guide is important because the rankings of journals in it informs decisions about hiring, compensation, and the like. Many decision-makers use the ABS list to try to predict whether a given publication will translate into a high ranking by the REF reading panel, which then translates into a bit of QR money for the university.
I’ve posted in the past about the ABS ranking system and how it compares to the equivalent rankings systems used in Australia (Australian Deans list) and France (CNRS). The ABS ranking system is used by some business schools outside of the UK, including a few employers in Canada. There has been a fair bit of discussion on social media about the personalities on this list. Personally, I’m pretty happy with the choice of the two individuals whose input into the business and economic history list has been requested as neither is a postmodernist. Anyway, I’m sharing the list of the subject experts that the ABS has recently published. I’m doing so under the fair use/fair dealing rule, of course.
I’m struck by the fact there are number of academics at Canadian universities on this list, including a couple from the University of Western Ontario, where I did my PhD. I’ve put their names in red.
Robert Andersen is a living legend, of course, who is cross-appointed to sociology and political science and management. Awesome guy who must work 15 hours a day! Great role model for the rest of us.
